How to: Adjust Virtual Memory (swap file) size.
Solution:
Select 'Settings' in the 'Start' menu and select 'Control Panel'. Double-click the 'System' icon and click the 'Performance' tab. Click 'Virtual Memory...'. Select the appropriate radio button. Click 'OK' and reboot the computer.
The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
NOTE: It is advisable to defragment the hard drive to optimize performance of the swap file.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
3) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)

4) Click the 'Performance' tab and click 'Virtual Memory...'. (The' Virtual Memory' dialog box appears.)

CAUTION: It is advisable to let Windows adjust the settings automatically. Manually adjusting settings should be done by a qualified computer technician.
5) Do one of the following:
a) To allow Windows to manage the virtual memory, select the 'Let Windows manage the virtual memory settings (recommended)' radio button.
NOTE: This option lets Windows dynamically allocate disk space to serve as virtual memory as required.
b) Select the 'Let me specify my own virtual memory settings' radio button.
1] To manually specify virtual memory settings:
a] In the 'Hard disk' box, type the letter of the hard disk on which the swap file is to be created.
NOTE: Make sure that the disk you select has adequate free disk space for the size of the swap file.
b] Type the minimum size of the swap file in the ' Minimum' box.
c] Type the maximum size of the swap file in the 'Maximum' box.
CAUTION: It is advisable to let Windows adjust the virtual memory settings automatically. Manually adjusting settings should be done by a qualified computer technician.
NOTE: It is recommended that you set the minimum size of the swap file to at least 2 megabytes (MB).
2] Select the 'Disable virtual memory (not recommended)' check box.
CAUTION: Selecting this option may cause the computer to stop completely or may degrade system performance. Do not select this option unless specifically instructed to do so by a qualified computer technician or next-level support.
6) Click 'OK'. (The 'System Properties' dialog box reappears.)
7) Click 'OK'.
8) Reboot the computer for settings to take effect.
